Lizzo was a member of a rock-prog group where she sang and played the flute. Her family had relocated to Denver which meant she was on her own in her quest to launch her career in Houston. Lizzo was a car owner and sometimes lay on the floor of her studio. Lizzo also used the gym for showers in the gym. Her father passed away when she was twenty-one. The two had been very close and it was a very devastating loss. Following the death of her father she quit the prog band. Following a brief stop in Denver, Lizzo moved to Minneapolis in 2011 on the advice of a good friend. Lizzo soon found herself at the center of the music scene. She was part of the girl bands Chalice and GRRRL PRETY. Her debut album, Lizzobangers, came out in 2013 under an independent label.
