Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a young child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused through word-related associations. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that this school wasn't for her. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
